For centuries, the chief ritual authority over every rite of Shree Mahalaxmi (Shree Ambabai) has belonged, by unbroken family tradition, to the Kshetra Upadhyay lineages of Karveer — Gramjoshi, Latkar and Dharmadhikari. The authority to perform every kulachar and sacred rite of Shree Mahalaxmi rests, by centuries of unbroken tradition, with the Shree Karveer Kshetra Upadhyay families — a trust carried in handwritten manuscript, and in memory.
Our families hold an ancient collection of handwritten scriptural manuscripts — the very texts from which every ritual inside the Shree Mahalaxmi temple continues to be performed today. This written knowledge, passed down through generations of our Rigvedi Kshetra Upadhyay ancestry, defines the precise sequence, mantra and method of each annual and occasional rite performed for the Mother Goddess.
Each new generation of our lineage is trained rigorously in these rites — through gurukul-style study, under our own elders and gurus, in Vedic and Agamic learning and in the fine detail of our Kshetra Upadhyay tradition. Today, the living scholars of these families continue to perform the temple's entire yearly cycle of rituals with devotion, discipline and scholarship.
